Michael Strahan and Nicole Murphy have been engaged since 2009 according to the December 17, 2012 edition of US Weekly. Apparently, neither has insisted on an actual wedding. Could one of them sue the other to perform the agreement to marry? In Louisiana, the answer would be “no”. Although people are free to contract with one another, Louisiana forbids the enforcement of contracts that are against public policy or good morals. Forcing people to marry or to pay damages would fun afoul of the basic legal principle that marriage cannot be coerced.
